Religion and Politics

Religion and Politics
Current mood: irritated

I was reading in Newsweek a short time ago a story on religion in politics...people seem not to realize that our founding fathers were largely atheists. Huckabee recently used a John Adams quote: "freedom needs religion just as religion needs freedom, " and went on to say that this is because of morals. Huckabee, like many others, equate religion with people of outstanding moral standing. This couldn't be farther from the truth. There are more "christians" in US prisons than any other religion...a statistic that is often conveniently forgotten. Many of the people that I have in my life are atheists or agnostics...people that I volunteer with, that join me at fund and toy raisers for needy children and victims of disease, famine and disasters....but because I am an "atheist," I MUST be an amoral person. Freedom for religion in this country INCLUDES the freedom to be non-religious. I keep reading how 80-90% of AMericans polled say they would never vote for an atheist...just like that...and why? "Because our leader needs to be a moral person." As Hawkins likes to say..."RELIGION POISONS EVERYTHING." Seems to me that everytime we get a religious zealot in office, things get bad....may I just START with Bush's current Crusade? And this nonesense that atheists are all communists has got to stop...I love freedom just as much as all the other bikers out there...wouldn't change it for the world! If people want to keep the Christ in Christmas...go ahead...I don't care...I'll celebrate the Solstice instead...but we DO need to keep religion OUT of politics....I wouldn't expect you to live under my rules....why should I live under yours?

I agree that you have the right to believe in what you want to. But I say that politicians only use religion as a crutch to get the votes. As far as I am concerned, politicians only worship money and power. Neither of which has ever been a good mix. So wether you believe in religion or not really is no concern of  mine. I just believe in freedom for all to do or not to do as they wish. Politics on the other hand is always a problem. religion withstanding or not.

I have to agree...personally, I have thought for a long time now that we need to get rid of party politics...just to stop people from voting republican or democrat without really thinkng about what they are doing....make the politicians truly sell themselves to us without a party label....plenty of times now I have found a local independent that I think matches what I am looking for...but then the fear of the worst possible scenario enters my head and then I start to worry if I am throwing a vote away...knowing that if the votes are split enough, someone even WORSE will get into office.

Let's see who we have to vote for and what will happen when they become elected. If any of the  Republican fanatics like Huckleberry, Romney or Guiliiani get elected, it will be the same as we have now. A ruler who keeps the USA divided. OK, so we should elect a Democrat?  Ok, let them tax your booze and smokes to pay for health care and whatever else they can tax us. They will let the illegal aliens in and smile at you while they are doing it. I just wish someone just represented the people and not special interests. Tell me how to float this boat and I will gladly vote. Right now I don't like any of my choices. No candidate represents me. Our freedoms are not being put to a test, we are just losing them everyday.
