The History of Scrubby’s Tavern
Back in the late 1930’s/early 40’s, my Great-Uncle Scrubby and his wife Lena purchased a small tavern located in a small Italian community, Langleyville, which was outside of Taylorville, Illinois. The tavern was a fixture in the area for about 40 years. My Mom speaks of memories about her first customer, whom she spilled her first serving of beer onto his shoe. My memories include dancing, drinking, loud Italians, hell-raisin', etc.…..”Man, it didn’t get any better”. Anyway, the tavern no longer exists, it was made into a home but the memories of ‘Scrubby’s’ have never left me, so I am reviving my Great-Uncle’s tavern. First I am launching my Cyber-tavern then when a great location is found, I will open “the real deal", which will be the Italian/Biker Bar Tavern/store.
My reinvention of ‘Scrubby’s Tavern’ will have a personal twist. The headliner will say “What the hell do you want?” which is dedicated to our family friend, Beans. He was the tavern owner, farmhand, and grouch who loved us as his own and was loved by many. No matter who you were, whether or not he knew you, as you entered his tavern, pretty much the first thing out of his mouth would be, “Well, What the hell do you want?”. Now that, my friends, is a Mentor. I admired Beans life and his attitude which expressed ‘Like me or don’t like me, here I am and by the way, drink a beer while you are deciding’.
