Scootworks releases over 7 million items to online inventory
Posted On 10/11/2008 04:31:21
It's been a long time in the works, but the new Scootworks site integration is finally online. We started this gargantuan undertaking this past February, and 2 of us have been writing code non-stop ever since. We are just down the road and receive daily shipments from one of the largest motorcycle parts warehouses in the US. As a result of our long time relationship and annual volumes with them, we were able to negotiate a deal to allow us to handle over 7 million items and provide deep discounts to our customers from our Zebulon facility. We typically stock around 32,000 SKU’s, and knew this would take a lot of work.

If you visit our site at www.scootworks.com you’ll find loads of new items at great prices. Our new site addition is running pretty good, though we’re still working on lots of things like links to the correct categories, debugging our dual server setup, and such. We’ll be installing dropdown menus to most categories this weekend to hopefully make our menus less intimidating to shoppers. We suspect this will take a few days yet to have up and running as smoothly as we’d like, but we hope the savings we’re passing along will make it worth the aggravation of little quirks you might find along the way.

If you go there and shop around the site, be aware that there are dual shopping carts at this time. We’re working on an application to merge those automatically (and transparently) for the customer, but don’t worry. Just select whatever items you like, and when you’re ready to check out, read the bold red instructions in the cart…it’ll walk you though the simple process.

There are piles of new deals in the works…we’re working on something with Helmet House right now, that should make for a sweet deal for deep discounts to our customers on all of their product lines as well. We’re building our in-house inventory even larger, for what we hope will be the best upcoming riding season ever!

Go to www.scootworks.com and click on [Shop Online] or the Warehouse Gateway image in the middle of the page (seen here) and check it out. If you have any problems or questions during this debug phase, please drop me a note to support @ scootworks . com .

Scootworks News and Sales...
Posted On 09/15/2008 08:22:14
This is a long one, 'cause we have loads of things to talk about: Our annual fall sale is now underway, we’re pushing discounts even deeper than ever before on select items to move some of our summer stock out before the slow season hits. Poke around on the site and see if you find what you want…and let us know if you don’t at support @ scootworks . com . Despite the size of our site, we’re constantly working to keep it up to date and have all of our parts listed on it…yet we often are way behind. The new site upgrades will make it much easier for us to manage inventory than it has been in the previous 10 years… things have changed a LOT on the internet since we started the company in ’98!

Speaking of the new site upgrades… We’re getting closer to launching the new website, as we’ve been working around the clock in recent weeks with our programmer to get the last of the bugs ironed out. In the meanwhile, much work is underway at the main site at Scootworks.com . Parts of the original site will be merged into the new website, so we’re getting it updated as well.

We have a couple of news sites where we post the latest info on Scootworks events, new items, upcoming projects, bike build pic links, and more. These are BlogSpot and on our myspace site at MySpace . We also have an events site where we post info about past and upcoming events..it currently has info on the recent Scootworks summer Slam ’08. It’s at our Scootworks Event Site .

We have many of our previous Scootworks Newsletters online at Scootworks.com , click on the [Scootworks Newsletters] image in the LH side of the main page to see these.

We have recently updated our growing list of Scootworks Dealers. You can look for a dealer in your area on our site at http://www.scootworks.com , click on [ScootWorks Dealers] on the LH side of the main page. If you have a local shop that would like to become a dealer, please point them at our site for info…there is a link near the top of the main page labeled as [Dealer Program].

Those of you who work at OEM dealers and/or independent shops, the Indy Dealer Expo is coming on February 13, 2009. If you’re there, look us up and stop by for a visit! We’ll have some of our newest projects on display, as well as samples of the 680+ items we manufacture.

Loads of chrome, polished, and powder coated items were finished this week, and the gang at Scootworks have been working like mad to get these items packaged and ready for shipment. If you’ve been waiting on a backordered Scootworks metal item, it’s likely finished and on the way! Also, another batch of goodies came back from chrome for our chrome exchange program and are being completed/packaged now.

Among more new items at Scootworks this week are: Several new exhaust systems, expansion of our chrome bolt/fastener hardware lineup, a new universal handlebar mounted accessory to carry electronics like MP3, Cell phone, GPS, etc (on the misc page for all brands), several intake systems, and a few specifics below:

Sitemeter is blocking IE users from the web...
Posted On 08/02/2008 05:54:39
www.sitemeter.com is once again - down... The popular website tracking tool is now blocking users with IE from all sites on the web who use sitemeter. As usual (per my experience over the last several years of being a paying customer), they're not answering our emails, and are otherwise unreachable. The entire Gawker network, and loads of other popular sites are also dead in the water until they get around to fixing the issue.

Sitemeter is a webmaster tool that lets us know how many people come to the site, what pages they frequent most, what keywords bring people to us, etc. It allows us the ability to build a better website, something that we've been working on constantly over the last 10 years. It's not a big brother tool to see who exactly is coming to the site, harvest email addresses, peep into people's computers, and such. It's a helpful webmaster tool when it works, but over the years it's has cost many thousands of dollars in lost sales, website downtime and problems. We've offered and ask for workarounds to have our sites ignor them when they're having problems, but get no response form the company...only a recurring monthly charge from our credit card.

As of yesterday (8/1), we decided that we'd had enough losses as a result of their big company attitude. We have 18 employees that depend on www.Scootworks.com, as well as thousands upon thousands of visitors each day that expect us to be online and functional. At Scootworks, we've been rewriting hundreds of pages of code overnight to try and get www.scootworks.com back up and running for IE users.

Sitemeter may be OK for a hobby site, but think long and hard before you allow them into your back pocket. Our account is their "Premium" paid account, so we supposedly get the "best" service.

As of this morning (8/2) Sitemeter is _still_ down (without reply to emails, again). We still have hundreds of pages on www.ScootWorks.com to rewrite (instruction pages, description pages, newsletter archives, etc), but at least the bulk of the site is back up for everyone to access. We'll be working through the weekend to rid ourselves of sitemeter.

Hey Sitemeter: Thanks once again for extra expenses and sucking another pile of time away... NOT!
